Funeral Arrangements


Leon Ray Schoenthaler, 51 of Newport died approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday at home as a result of a house fire.
Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe where funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Katherine Kolodziejczyk, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will officiate. Cremation will follow.
Born April 29, 1958 in Maquoketa, Iowa he was the son of Milo D. and Fern D. (Schnoor) Schoenthaler.
He enjoyed working at Auto Alliance, Flat Rock where he had been for twenty three years. He was a team member in the body shop. He was a member of the UAW Local #3000.
Leon was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Monroe and was a 1976 graduate of Maquoketa High School, where he lettered in football, basketball and track. His basketball team was Iowa State runner-up that year. Leon came to the Monroe area in 1986 but was still an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. His enthusiasm for the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs and NASCAR was always apparent. He enjoyed cooking and grilling and spending time with his children, friends and family, and playing cards, especially euchre. He also enjoyed playing sports and had participated on several local 30 and over leagues including the Terrarium Basketball Team and the Green Meadows Softball Team.
Surviving are his parents, Milo and Fern Schoenthaler of Maquoketa, Iowa; a son, Shaun M. Schoenthaler of Monroe; a daughter, April N. Schoenthaler of Lambertville; three brothers, Mark (Kathy) Schoenthaler of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Boyd (Pam) Schoenthaler of Maquoketa, Iowa and Todd (Chris) Schoenthaler of Edmond, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles.
Memorial may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
